JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Western Michigan softball team suffered a sweep on Friday in Alabama, dropping game one to Samford University, 4-2, before falling to Jacksonville State University, 7-0, in the nightcap.
WMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs of Samford came storming back with a lone run in the fifth and a burst of three in the sixth to steal the game. Junior
Haley Boxwell set forth the Bronco scoring with a two-run dinger to left field in the second.
Courtney Farrish went 3-for-3 in the effort, while freshman
Haleigh Smith went 1-for-2 and scored once.
Riley Chumbley,
Alyssa Kramer, and Boxwell both went 1-for-3 with Boxwell scoring once.
Rissa Bajusz recorded five strikeouts in five innings pitched for WMU, allowing one earned run and two hits.
The Broncos dropped a 7-0 decision to host Jacksonville State in the second game of the day and invite. The Gamecocks plated three runs in the third before adding one in the fourth and another set of three in the fifth to take the game.
Madysyn Lopez threw 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out two.
Caitlyn Mullins put in 0.2 innings, allowing one earned run before
Autumn Godwin put in two innings of relief work, allowing just one run with two strikeouts.
Western Michigan will conclude play at the 2023 JSU Gamecock Invite on Saturday with a rematch lineup against the Samford Bulldogs at 1 pm, followed by a nightcap with the Gamecocks of JSU at 6 pm.
