CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- The Western Michigan softball team went 1-1 on Saturday at the Chattanooga Frost Classic, falling to Northwestern State 7-5 and defeating host Chattanooga, 4-2.
The Broncos took an early 2-0 lead against Northwestern State when junior Erin Binkowski hit a two-run shot down the left line for her first home run of the season. Senior Ivy Schaaf drove in a unearned run with a single in the second to extend WMU's lead to 3-0. Northwestern State got a run back, unearned, in the bottom of the third.
Bronco pitcher Jordan Kurth ran into trouble in the fifth and allowed six runs on five hits as Northwestern State pulled ahead, 7-3. Kaylee Isenburg delivered the big blow in the inning, hitting a three-run home run.
With out out in the top of the seventh, freshman Kaylen Glenfield came in to pinch hit for the Broncos. Glenfield hammered a ball out to right field for her first career home run to cut the deficit to 7-4. Kelsea Cichocki continued the rally with a two-out double and scored on an error for WMU's fifth run. Northwestern State however was able to end the game as the Broncos took a strikeout, looking.
Against Chattanooga, the Broncos scored a run without a hit in the first inning when Mackenzie Swinehart reached on a walk and made use of a wild pitch and an error.
Back-to-back RBI doubles pulled Chattanooga ahead in the third, 2-1.
Marlee Wilson hit a leadoff double for WMU in the fourth and pinch runner Erin Barg went on to score the tying run on a fielder's choice by Skyler Sobeski.
Cichocki hit a solo home run for Western Michigan with one out in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead run. Binkowski walked in the next at bat and pinch runner Aspen Williams scored following a sac bunt and an error.
WMU used three pitchers in the game. Holly Vantilburg got the start and went 2.1 innings, allowing two runs, before giving the ball off the Anissa Sanchez.
Sanchez scattered four hits over two scoreless innings. Kurth was called back out with one out and two on in the fifth and worked the Broncos out of the inning. Kurth picked up the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four.
Western Michigan (4-6) closes out the Frost Classic tomorrow against Farleigh-Dickinson at 10 a.m.Â
