KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan gymnastics team turned in the second-highest score on uneven bars in program history with a 49.175, during its Breast Cancer Awareness meet on Sunday vs. Northern Illinois.
During the event, four Broncos scored a 9.825 or higher, led by
Jessica Juncaj who posted a career-high 9.875. She was followed by
Jessie Peszek and
Kelsey Hood who each had 9.850 and
Anna Corbett who scored a 9.825. Hood's and Corbett's were each career-highs as well, while Peszek's score marked the fourth straight meet she has scored a 9.800 or higher on bars. The team total of 49.175 is the highest on uneven bars for WMU since 2004.
"Bars is something Coach Scharns has been working really hard with our team on," head coach
Penny Jernigan said. "I've seen so much progress in them since last season and I think this score is indicative of the amount of effort and commitment they've put into it."
Rachael Underwood was the team's most consistent performer of the day, scoring a 9.725 or higher on all four of her events, capped by a 9.875 on the floor, a season-high. She won the individual title on floor and the all-around after finishing the day with an all-around score of 39.150, a career-best and the ninth best individual all-around score in program history.
"
Rachael Underwood had a great day," Jernigan said. "She had a beautiful vault, the best bar routine I've ever seen her do. She was back in her groove on beam and floor was beautiful. She's been knocking on the door of that 39 all-around, so we're not surprised but we're really proud of her."
Brittany Aragon, who scored a season-high 9.825 on vault last week at Bowling Green, turned in her fourth straight score of 9.700 or higher, tallying a 9.750 on vault this week.
The final competitor of the day for the Broncos was
Katie Jennings who scored a 9.825 on floor. It was her second straight week scoring a 9.825 or higher in the event after totaling a career-high 9.850 last week. Her performance helped lead the Broncos to a 48.900 in the event, tying its season-high on floor.
The Broncos will now be on the road for their next three meets beginning next Sunday when they travel to Texas to take part in a quad meet at Texas Women's College at 2 p.m. eastern time.
