HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Western Michigan freshman forward Trevor Elias netted his first career goal to give the Bronco hockey team a 2-1 win at Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night in front of 3,873 fans.

With 9:42 remaining in the third period Tyler Ludwig took a shot from the far point. Jared Katz deflected the puck and it went off the cross-bar. Elias was positioned by the near post and tapped in the rebound for his first career tally. Ludwig and Katz both picked up assists as WMU took its first and only lead of the night.

The Bronco defense and WMU goaltender Jerry Kuhn held the Chargers off the scoreboard for the rest of the game, and Kuhn made eight of his game-high 31 saves in the third period.

UAH took the lead on their fourth power play chance of the game. Freshman Justin Cseter shot the puck over the stick-side shoulder Kuhn from the far circle to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

After the Broncos killed off a penalty late in the second period, the puck trickled to Cam Watson, who went in on a break-away. Watson was tripped taking his shot and was rewarded with a penalty shot. Watson took the puck in on UAH goalie Cameron Talbot and beat him on his stick side for his first goal of the season. The goal was the first successful Bronco penalty shot since Pat Dwyer netted one against Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 1, 2002.

Once again the Broncos spent a lot of time in the penalty box, racking up seven penalties for 14 minutes. However the Broncos killed off five of the six penalties to keep themselves in the game. The Bronco power play went 0-for-3 on the night.

The Broncos close out their first road series of the season on Saturday night at 8:05 p.m. against the Chargers.
