KALAMAZOO -- The College Sports Information Directors of America announced today that Western Michigan senior center Joe Reitz (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Men's Basketball Second Team.
Reitz, who has a 3.72 GPA in finance, was named a First Team Academic All-American last season to become the third Bronco (Bill Vanderwoude 1970-71; Sean Wightman 1991-93) to be a two-time Academic All-American and only the seventh player in Mid-American Conference history. No other MAC school has had more than one Academic All-American in men's basketball.
This season, Reitz leads WMU in scoring (15.4), rebounding (8.2) and field goal percentage (.569). He is sixth, second and third in those three categories in the MAC. In conference games, Reitz is fourth in scoring (16.5) and second in rebounding (9.2). Reitz has led the team in scoring 11 times and rebounding on 19 occasions, while posting 24 double-figure scoring games, including 18 straight, and five double-doubles.
He has put his name throughout the WMU record book. He is fifth in scoring with 1,635 points and in other career statistics, he is first in free throws made (544) and attempted (775), fourth in field goal percentage (.548) and third in rebounds with 897.
