WMU ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES UNDER MORRISON

Morrison, who enters his fifth season on the staff and also serves as the linebackers coach for the Broncos, returns for his second season as the Broncos defensive coordinator in 2009.  He, along with with Jake Moreland, came to the Broncos in Bill Cubit's first season of 2005 and has helped put the program into two postseason bowl games over the last three seasons.

In 2008, the defensive side of the ball boasted five All-Mid-American Conference selections en route to ranking second in the MAC in sacks and third in tackles for loss and rush defense.  Morrison's positional unit of linebacker touted two All-MAC selections, including first-time first team selection Austin Pritchard.

In 2007, Morrison's defensive unit accounted for 246 tackles for the Broncos (28.2 percent) and had a pair of linebackers record of 70 stops.  Dustin Duclo, who made a career-best 74 tackles, and Boston McCornell accounted for 173 of those tackles from the linebacker position.

In just his first season in the Brown & Gold, McCornell earned Second Team Defense All-MAC with 99 tackles, the most by a Bronco since 2003.

The 2006 campaign was his first season at WMU as the linebackers coach and had the nation’s leader in sacks and tackles for loss in his unit in Associated Press All-America selection Ameer Ismail.

The 2006 corps of linebackers was a key component in Western Michigan leading the nation in sacks per game. Ismail alone led the nation with 17.0 sacks and 25.5 TFLs in 2006. Linebackers had a hand in the Broncos leading the country in interceptions as linebackers accounted for four picks on the season.

The Bronco defense not only led the country in interceptions (24) and sacks per game (3.54), but also snapped a 33-year old conference record by allowing just 76.1 rushing yards per game. It bested the former record of 77.0 ypg that had stood since 1973.

In 2005, Morrison’s defensive line accounted for 16.5 (53.2 percent) of the Broncos’ 31.0 sacks and six of the team’s eight blocked kicks. Lineman Paul Moersch swatted three kicks in 2005, tying a WMU record for a career. Nick Varcadipane was named Freshman All-America by CollegeFootballNews.com.

He served as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Morrison previously coached at the University of Michigan, spending two seasons as the graduate assistant in charge of outside linebackers (2003-04) and a year in quality control for defense (2002).

Wolverine fans may remember Morrison as a first-team All-Big Ten performer (1994) who ranks 10th in career tackles. He earned All-Big Ten honors in 1994. After earning a bachelor’s degree in sports management and communications in 1994, Morrison played four seasons in the National Football League with the Indianapolis Colts (1995-98).

Morrison started 31 games over four seasons and played in the 1995 AFC Championship Game. Morrison (37/DOB: 12-28-71) also served two seasons (2000-01) as defensive coordinator at Brother Rice High School, helping the Warriors to a state title in 2000.

A Birmingham, Mich., native, Steve is married to the former Mary Campana and they are the parents of two sons, Alexander (7) and Marco (3) and Roman (1).
