Final Results

YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Western Michigan women's track & field team took second place at the Mid-American Conference Champions, hosted by EMU, falling to Akron by 10 points.

The Broncos were in fourth place coming into today's competition and hoped to make their move during the sprints today but finished with 96 points and defending MAC Champions, Akron, turned in 106 points for the win.

"We didn't lose for lack of effort or lack of performance," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "We competed our tails off, Akron is just a tough team and has won in it four years in a row and they just knew what they had to do and came out and competed."

Senior Becky Horn took home individual championships in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Horn's time in the 400, 54.19 seconds, beat a NCAA Provisional qualifying mark. She also ran a 2:12.62 in the 800 beat out Jessica Lhotsky of Kent State by .27 seconds. For her efforts Horn was awarded Most Outstanding Track Performer for the event.

"I think those are the two hardest races in track & field," said coach Lycan. "The only event in between is the 60-meter dash so she had less than an hour between. For her to win both is just amazing."

Also a MAC champion is senior Joy Eloms, who took home first place in the triple jump with a distance of 40-feet-4-inches, setting a school record in the process and becoming the first Bronco to ever break 40 feet. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native also took home third place in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 60-meter dash. Combined she earned 23 points and was the high-point performer in the MAC Championships.

The 4x400 relay team consisting of Danielle Brown, Jennifer Sabra, Victoria Chatman and Horn, came into the MAC Championships with the best time in the MAC and followed through, taking first place with a time of 3:44.43 and setting a field house record.

Chatman, a freshman from Taylor, Mich., took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.06 and Sabra finished in fifth place. Freshman Samantha Draney took home six place in the mile-run, while fellow freshman Ashley Hunault made the finals in the triple jump, despite never competing in the triple jump till she arrived at the MAC Championships.

Irene Cooper took home third in the shot put, setting a personal record with a distance of 46-feet-6-inches.

Brown took home second place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.62 and was just missed out on first place by .04 seconds.

The All-MAC selections have not been announced, but will be posted as soon as they are received.
