Barstad, Whitney, Tschetter Make MAC All-Tournament Team
AKRON, Ohio - Gracie Barstad, Jennifer Tschetter and Meredith Whitney individually left their own respective marks for WMU softball in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Tournament, making up 33 percent of the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Barstad led the Broncos offensively with a .462 batting average over five games. She went 6-for-13 at the plate with a tournament-best three doubles and six RBis to go along with three runs scored. She is the first Bronco to make the MAC All-Tournament team three times in her career (2009, 2011, 2012).
Tschetter went 5-for-15 at the plate for WMU (.333), one of four Broncos to hit over .300 for the tournament. She had a pair of RBIs and a run scored but she made her mark in the outfield, hauling in eight put outs on as many chances to help WMU finish with a tournament best 1.000 fielding percentage, and her catch in center field in the consolation final was possibly the defensive play of the tournament.
Whitney amassed a tournament best 46 strikeouts in throwing every pitch for Western Michigan over its five games of this year's tournament. She had a tournament ERA of 1.70 and opposing batters hit a minuscule .178 against her. Three of her five starts resulted in double-digit strikeout performances, including a tournament best 13 against top-seeded Ball State. Whitney earned a spot on the MAC All-Tournament team for the second time in her career after being named Tournament MVP in 2011.
Western Michigan softball joined only tournament champion Miami to have three student-athletes earn a spot on this year's team.
