WMU Softball Sweeps EMU with 2-0 Win
YPSILANTI, Mich. - Freshman hurler Becca Shemberger allowed three hits in a combined 2-0 shut out of Eastern Michigan on Sunday to earn her fifth collegiate win in the circle.
Shemberger allowed an Eagle hit in the second, third and to lead off the seventh in her third shut out of the 2012 season. EMU put its most pressure on the freshman and the Bronco defense in the last of the seventh.
The lead off double was followed by a walk which brought on a pitching change, bringing Meredith Whitney into the circle. Another walk loaded the bases and put the tying run on second and winning run on third.
Whitney coaxed a fly out to left field on an 0-1 offering and then, in true Whitney fashion, sat down the final two batters on strikeouts. The second out came in five pitches and the last out was a strikeout looking on four pitches. It is the first save of Whitney's career.
Western Michigan's offense scored what turned out to be the only run it would need in the top of the first. Whitney led off with a triple, only the second of her career and first since 2009. Diana Patterson, who was 2-for-4 on the day, doubled to right field, scoring Whitney.
The Broncos added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Courtney Rousseau, who hit .471 over six games this week, singled to center field with one out. Tara Buchanan followed with a base hit up the middle. Emma Bogart, hitting .333 as a pinch hitter, wrapped a single up the middle for an RBI, pinch hitting for Mackenzie Shepeck.
WMU enters its 2011 NCAA Regional rematch against nationally ranked Michigan on Tuesday with a 17-12 record, winning 14 of its last 20 game.
