JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– The Broncos jumped out front, 3-0 after two and a half innings, but Bethune-Cookman stormed back to knock off the Broncos 9-3 at the Kennel Club Classic, hosted by the University of North Florida Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos scored two more runs in the top of the third, as Dager again got things started with a two-base hit. Nathan Marquardt followed with a single, pushing Dager over to third. Lewis collected his second RBI, bringing Dager across the dish with a single to center. Marquardt later scored on an RBI double by Matt Abro.
Things looked promising, as the Broncos had built a 3-0 advantage, but Bethune-Cookman (7-8) came alive and rattled off nine unanswered runs in its next four at bats.
BCC first got on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. The Wildcats then took the lead in the third, on a second two-run shot and used a Bronco throwing error to tag on an additional run, going ahead 5-3.
Scoring two runs in both the fifth and sixth, Bethune-Cookman sealed the 9-3 victory.
Bronco starter Brian Schutzbach (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs, four earned, on five hits. He threw 3.0 innings and faced three batters in the fourth, before the bullpen stepped in.
Dager ended the day 3-for-4 with two doubles. Lewis also was 3-for-4, tallying two RBI. The Broncos out-hit Bethune Cookman, 10-8.
