Western Michigan Takes Series at Toledo with 6-2 Win Sunday
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan baseball won deciding game three of this weekend's Mid-American Conference series at Toledo, 6-2 Sunday. Sophomore catcher Brett Sunde hit his second career home run in the contest, a two-run shot in the fifth.
With the win, Western Michigan improved to 21-27 on the year and 10-14 in the conference. The Broncos are still fighting for one of the final eight spots in the upcoming MAC Tournament and travel to Central Michigan next weekend for the final regular-season series.
Bronco freshman left-hander Keegan Akin (5-3) went 8.1 innings to earn up the win on the mound. He had three strikeouts, three walks, scattered six hits and gave up the two runs. Sophomore RHP Gabe Berman recorded the final two outs for his team-leading eighth save of the year.
Sunde batted 3-for-5 with four RBIs and was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He also drove in the Broncos' first two runs of the game, hitting a two-out RBI double in the first and a two-out RBI single in the third.
Freshman third baseman Grant Miller also had three hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior shortstop Andrew Sohn picked up a hit and an RBI and senior left fielder Dan Shutes picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk in the eighth.
