Gold defeats Brown 7-3 to Win Fall Ball Series
The Brown struck first in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Grant Miller singled down the left field line. Sophomore Tyler Frank on the very next pitch smoked a ball down the right field line for a one-out RBI double as Miller scored from first.
The lead was short-lived however as in the top of the third, the Gold team exploded for four runs. With the bases loaded junior Andrew Sohn was able to slap a hit right back up the middle and went off the glove of senior shortstop Dan Shutes to score the inning's first run. The next batter junior Caleb Caton also blasted a single through the left side of the infield and senior Theo Piccirilli was able to score after he reached on the error by Shutes. After freshman Beau Filkins walked to yet again load the bases, another freshman Nick Vogelmeier was able to drive in Canton and then advance to second on a throwing error that also drove in Sohn.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, after Miller was hit by a pitch and both Frank and senior Vinnie Booker walked, the Brown squad looked to be in business with the bases loaded and two outs. Shutes made up for his error in the top of third by knocking in the Brown squad's second run of the day as he was able to beat out a fielder’s choice ball to score Miller. The rally was over rather quickly as junior Jared Kujawa grounded out to the first baseman.
The play of the day would belong to Caton as in the top of the sixth inning with the Gold squad holding on to a narrow 4-2 lead, Caton blasted a 400-plus yard shot over the left center wall for a two-run home run. That widened the Gold’s lead to 7-2 as earlier in the inning senior Steve Buglione grounded out to second base but scored Piccirilli who was on third.
Brown added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore Brandon Cable doubled down the right field line scoring Kujawa from second.
The Gold team used a total of seven pitchers with senior Steve Laudicina throwing two solid innings, giving up just four hits, one earned run and registering one strikeout in the 10 batters he faced. On the hill for the Brown team was junior college transfer Chad Mayle who pitched three innings giving up six hits, two earned runs and striking out three.
In the batter’s box, Caton was the offensive spark for the Gold squad as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and registered three RBIs. Sohn finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Brown & Gold series concludes the fall season for the Broncos.
