Brown Evens Series With 7-3 Game Two Victory
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Brown fought back and evened the annual Brown & Gold fall baseball series with a 7-3 victory in Game Two at Robert J. Bobb Stadium Tuesday. Decisive Game Three is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
After a lopsided loss in Game One, Brown looked to set the tempo right out of the gate. With two outs in the first inning, junior Jared Kujawa doubled in the gap and sophomore Brett Sunde followed with a two-out RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Junior RHP Will Nimke did his part by keeping the Gold bats quiet with three scoreless innings. Nimke did not give up a hit, walked one and struck out one. He induced eight groundball outs while not allowing a baserunner past first base.
The Gold squad would not go quietly however. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, senior Theo Piccirilli and freshman Nick Vogelmeier set the table for junior Andrew Sohn with back-to back-singles. With his side chasing three runs, Sohn scorched a 2-1 fastball over the 375 mark in left center for a three-run homer to even the score.
Kujawa quickly responded for the Brown with his third hit of the day and second double to lead off the top of the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Vinnie Booker delivered a two-out, two-run RBI single to put the Brown on top for good. In the bottom of the inning, junior RHP Adam Jones came in and threw a perfect inning of relief by getting back-to-back strikeouts and a weak ground ball to third base.
Brown would tack on two more runs in the top half of the seventh before sophomore closer Gabe Berman came in and shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory. Berman fanned the first two batters he faced and got freshman Beau Filkins to fly out for the final out.
Kujawa and sophomore Kurt Hoekstra both had three hits apiece. Booker and freshman Grant Miller each chipped in two hits and a pair of RBIs and redshirt freshman Tyler Frank reached base three times as well.
Junior right-hander Nick Bradley got the start for the Gold while sophomore Derek Schneider, senior Patrick Borlik and senior Monty Porter all made appearances out of the bullpen.
Also joining Jones and Berman out of the bullpen to help preserve the victory for Brown was sophomore Pat Haynes and freshman Keegan Akin.
