Florida Gulf Coast Closes Series With 10-3 Win Over Broncos
FORT MYERS, Fla. - In the final game of the three game set, the Western Michigan baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast.
Sophomore Andrew Sohn had a multi-hit game for the second consecutive day. Sohn finished the day 2-for-3 with two singles, 5-12 in the series. In the seventh inning, Sohn scored on a pass ball to score the first run for WMU.
Getting the start for WMU was sophomore Will Nimke who allowed four runs on seven hits, in two innings. The Broncos used seven pitchers in the contest, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits.
The Eagles opened up the scoring in the second inning with a base clearing double down the left field line, scoring three. A grounder between the pitcher and first baseman scored a fourth run for FGCU. The Eagles put up four runs on four hits and a walk.
Junior Steve Buglione led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side. Caleb Caton followed up with a single up the middle on a diving stop by the second baseman, who was unable to flip the ball out of his glove. Kurt Hoekstra then grounded into a double play and advanced Buglione to third. The Broncos were unable to plate the runner.
WMU battled in the ninth, scoring two runs on a single by Buglione, his second hit of the day. Scoring for the Broncos were freshman Drew Farmer and junior Dan Schutes, who reached on walks.
FGCU added some insurance with one run in the seventh and five in the eighth to put the game out of reach for the Broncos.
The Broncos drop to 3-13 on the season. Western Michigan will resume play next Friday when they travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats. The three game series will begin on Friday, March 15, at 4:00 p.m.
