Luke Witkowski Signs with Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA BAY, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Lightning and general manager Steve Yzerman have announced the signing of Western Michigan captain Luke Witkowski to a two-year contract on Monday afternoon.

Witkowski leaves Western Michigan after four historic seasons for the team that drafted him in the sixth round, 160th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Holland, Mich., native appeared in 152 total games in the Brown & Gold and racked up 38 points on seven goals 31 assists.

Recently he was named Second Team All-CCHA after helping Western Michigan to a third place finish in the CCHA regular season and helping the Broncos to one of the top defenses in the country. He was a part of the only two teams in program history to appear in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2011 and 2012. Witkowski also helped the Broncos win the program’s second-ever CCHA Tournament Championship last season.

Witkowski was awarded the Bill Saunders Plus/Minus Award during the 2010-11 season after finishing the year with a plus-13 rating. Prior to Western Michigan he played in the USHL for the Fargo Fource of the United States Hockey League.
