KALAMAZOO -- Western Michigan fell to No. 3 Miami for its first home loss in conference play this season after being shutout 4-0 at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.

The Broncos (18-7-5, 14-5-3-1 CCHA) outshot the RedHawks 29-27 on the night but were unable to put one past Ryan McKay. Frank Slubowski made 18 saves in net and was relieved by Lukas Hafner in the third period. WMU was held scoreless on five power play opportunities.

Miami took a 1-0 lead at 12:43 in the first period on a goal by Riley Barber. Taylor Richart fired a shot through traffic from the right point and Barber redirected it in the slot and past Slubowski for his 12th of the season.

The RedHawks expanded their lead to 2-0 just 2:39 into the second period on another goal coming off a redirection. This time it was Barber who fired the shot and Curtis McKenzie redirected it into the net from the slot for his eighth of the season.

Midway through the period the lead was pushed to 3-0 on a goal by Max Cook. Blake Coleman created a turnover at the WMU blue line and Jimmy Mullin centered the puck to Cook in the slot. Cook’s initial shot was saved but the rebound bounced right to him and he punched it in for his second of the season.

Marc Hagel added a goal late in the third period on a wraparound after a Miami faceoff win in the WMU zone.

The Broncos head to Columbus, Ohio, to battle the Buckeyes on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
