CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference announced Friday that Western Michigan men's basketball player David Kool is the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for his performance during the week of Jan. 5-11.
Kool scored 26 points and added a career-high nine rebounds, three assists and two steals as Western Michigan won its first MAC opener on the road since the 2004-05 season in its first win at Central Michigan since the 2005-06 season. Kool hit 9-of-17 shots and 7-of-8 free throws to lead the Broncos over their in-state rivals. Kool's 16th career 20-point game moved him into a tie for 20th all-time at WMU with 1,099 career points. Kool also sports a cumulative grade point average of 3.38 and is majoring in physical education.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
This is the fourth week this season a male Bronco has won the award after Tim Hiller won three times during football season.
