WMU Announces Broncos To Face Gonzaga in 2011-12
In 2010-11, the Bulldogs finished the season with a 25-10 record, including a 14-2 mark at home and a 14-7 mark in non-conference play. They made their way to the WCC Tournament championship game for the 14th consecutive season, tying a record set by Kentucky from 1939-52, and polished off the tournament by the tournament title for the second time in three years. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th consecutive year before falling to Brigham Young in the round of 32.
This will be the first time the Broncos and the Bulldogs have ever squared off in men's basketball, but the Broncos have had success in limited exposure to WCC teams. WMU has a 2-1 record against schools from the WCC, including wins over Loyola-Marymount and Pepperdine. The sole loss came to Portland.
The addition of Gonzaga is just another challenge awaiting the Broncos, who will face no fewer than five - and possibly as many as eight - nonconference games against teams that reached postseason play in 2010-11. Currently, WMU is slated to play three NCAA Tournament teams (Gonzaga, Duke, and Oakland), one NIT Postseason tournament team (UW-Milwaukee), and one CBI team (Duquesne).
In addition, the Broncos' trip to the Puerto Rico Tip-Off will likely yield three more games against like teams. Of the seven other teams in the field, two reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010-11 (Purdue and Temple); three reached the final four of the NIT Postseason tournament (Alabama, Wichita State, and Colorado), and one played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (Iona), as did the Broncos.
