Broncos Fall Just Shy at Bowling Green
The Broncos rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set against the Falcons, who remain undefeated in MAC play. However, the Broncos were victimized by a Bowling Green run late in the fifth set, and WMU fell in the fifth set.
Jessica Brown had a team-high 15 kills for the Broncos, and committed just four errors on 29 swings for a .379 hitting percentage. Stephenee Yancy continued a run of excellent play with 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, as well as two blocks. Lena Oliver notched a team-high 23 digs.
After dropping the first set 25-18, a determined Broncos squad came out hot in the second set and tied the overall match. The Broncos took a 2-0 lead in the set when Yancy and Carlee Berland combined for a block, and from there the Broncos would never relinquish the lead for the rest of the set. WMU expanded the lead to four points when Brown recorded her fourth kill of the set, throwing one down for a 10-6 lead and forcing the Falcons into calling a timeout. Yancy posted a kill to give the Broncos a 15-11 lead, and the Broncos stretched the lead to six points when Gillian Asque pounded a kill that made it 19-13. The Broncos weathered a late run from the Falcons, as BGSU cut the lead to just 24-21, before a Bowling Green error gave the Broncos the set.
The Broncos put together an excellent fourth set as well, again starting out hot and keeping the Falcons at bay for the remainder. WMU raced out to a 5-2 lead on the strength of a kill by Brown and a number of Bowling Green errors; the run continued with a Berland kill and an Asque ace, and eventually the Broncos reached a 10-3 advantage on a Brown kill. Brown and Asque gave the Broncos an eight-point lead when they combined to block Danielle Tonyan, making the score 14-6, and the Broncos would be the first to 20 points when Yancy ripped a kill to make it 20-16. Asque recorded a kill to make the score 24-18, and Yancy forced a fifth set with a kill to make it 25-19.
