Peter McCarty enters is third season as a member of the Western Michigan coaching staff in 2009. Under McCarty's tutelage, the Bronco defensive line ranked second in the Mid-American Conference in sacks in each of the past two seasons, third in tackles for loss and rush defense in 2008 and fourth in total defense and tackles for loss in 2007.  Defensive end Zach Davidson earned Second Team Defense All-MAC honors in each of his last two seasons compiling 10.0 sacks and 22.0 tackles for loss during that span.


McCarty spent three seasons as the defensive line coach for the University of Central Florida. McCarty came to UCF after serving as the defensive line coach at Stanford from 2002-03.


In his first season at UCF, McCarty developed a pair of true freshmen defensive tackles into starters in Keith Shologan and Emeka Okammor. In 2005, Shologan was one of UCF’s most reliable players and totaled 29 tackles on the year.


McCarty, who has over 20 years of coaching experience, had previous stops at Georgia Tech, Illinois, Maryland and Holy Cross prior to coming to UCF. McCarty was the defensive tackles coach at Georgia Tech in 2001 under George O’Leary.


McCarty spent four seasons (1997-2000) as the defensive tackles coach at Illinois under Ron Turner. During his tenure, he helped the Fighting Illini to a victory in the 1999 Bowl.


Prior to his stint at Illinois, McCarty was the defensive ends and linebackers coach at Maryland for five years (1992-96) under head coach Mark Duffner.


McCarty also worked for Duffner as the outside linebackers coach at Holy Cross for five seasons (1986-91).


In 1991, McCarty spent the year as an intern for the New England Patriots.


From 1982-85, McCarty was the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at American International in Springfield, Mass.


McCarty began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Bangor High School in Maine. From there, he moved on to become the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Maine Central Institute.


McCarty was an all-conference linebacker at Massachusetts in 1977. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UMass in 1978 and a master’s degree in physical education from Syracuse in 1982.


A native of Bangor, Maine, McCarty (53/DOB: 1-12-56) has two sons, Cullen (11) and Jackson (8).
