WMU Football Announces Jay Steilberg as Director of Football Operations
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan football program welcomes Jay Steilberg as the program's new director of football operations. Steilberg most recently served in the same capacity at Ball State.
"Jay has outstanding experience at the Division I college football level and his knowledge of the Mid-American Conference in terms of player personnel and travel logistics will be immensely valuable to the success of our program moving forward," commented head coach Bill Cubit. "He came very highly recommended from many coaches across the country and we are happy to add him to our staff.
Steilberg, a native of Louisville, Ky., led the operations efforts at Ball State from 2003-11, serving as the program's operations director until 2008 and then as the assistant athletic director of operations until 2011.
"I am very happy to join the Western Michigan football staff," commented Steilberg. "I am extremely excited for the opportunity to join a program with such a proud tradition, and I thank Coach Cubit as well as all involved with this process."
Prior to joining the Cardinals, Steilberg served as an assistant football coach at his high school alma mater, St. Xavier on two occasions (1994-97, 1999-2000) as well as at DuPont Manual (1998) and Fern Creek (2001-02).
In 2011, Steilberg stepped away from Ball State but not away from college football as he served as a national scout with the National Collegiate Scouting Association and worked as a recruiting consultant as well.
Steilberg earned his bachelor's degree from Bellarmine in 2003 and master's from Ball State in 2010. He moves into the role left vacant by former director of football operations Tim Knox, who is working in the same capacity on Tim Beckman's staff at Illinois.
