Aleck Clinches Win as Broncos Beat Bulls
"It was a very cold, very windy day, and the weather was definitely a major obstacle," said WMU head women's tennis coach Betsy Kuhle. "The girls just played their hearts out today to get the win. It was unbelievable. We showed great mental toughness today."
The Broncos won the doubles point against the Bulls but fell behind 3-2 after the first four matches of singles play. However, junior Maggie Remynse overcame both her opponent and unfavorable weather conditions, beating Marta Stoyanova 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match to tie the score at 3-3.
With the match on the line, the freshman Aleck took care of business on the court, defeating Kira Golenko 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match to clinch the match victory for the Broncos.
"It's a huge stepping stone for a freshman to clinch a match win for the team in the conference tournament," said Kuhle. "She also played very well in doubles today, and got the job done when it counted.
The Broncos opened the match by quickly taking care of business in doubles play, taking the first two matches off the court to take the 1-0 lead in the match. Aleck teamed with April Kerr in the No. 1 doubles match to cruise past their opposition, defeating Tamara Markovic and Marta Stoyanova 8-2. Things were tighter in the No. 2 doubles match, but the results were very much the same; Kathleen Hawkins and Maria Nivia took a close match with Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas, defeating the Bulls' pairing 8-6.
Kathleen Hawkins provided the first singles point for the Broncos, coasting in the No. 4 singles match for a 6-1, 6-0 win over Podlas. The Bulls rebounded, however, and took the next three singles matches, setting up Remynse's and Aleck's heroics at the end of the match.
