Men's Tennis Wraps Second day at Gopher Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team completed its first full day of action at the Gopher Invitational hosted by Minnesota, wrapping up a successful opener with a solid day in both singles and doubles. The Broncos will return to action tomorrow morning for one session each of singles and doubles.

Pablo Mora had a perfect day in singles, winning one singles match each in both Flight 3 and Flight 4. He began the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Denver's William Ro, and completed his perfect day with a three-set victory over Princeton's Augie Bloom. Mora survived a second set tiebreaker loss to Bloom to cruise past him in the third set super-tiebreaker, winning 6-2, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (3). The wins bump Mora up to a winning record in singles this fall, at 8-7 with two more days of competition.

Four other players picked up a pair of wins on the day, with each splitting them among singles and doubles. Ruben Greiner earned a singles win against Denver's Alex Gasson in the top singles flight, downing him 6-3, 6-4 in a straight sets win. Greiner teamed with Jimmy Beckwith for a doubles win as well, defeating Princeton's Zach McCourt and Ben Quazzo in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5). Andrew Cahn also won a pair of matches, defeating Denver's Alex Clinkenbeard 7-5, 6-4 and teaming with Michael Treis to defeat Princeton's Bloom and Alex Day 8-6; Treis also teamed with Matt Hamilton to down Denver's Ro and Aidan Talcott 8-4. Stephen Payne rounded out the group of players with two wins, beating Princeton's Mo El Tonbari in singles in an eight-game pro set and teaming with Nadin Indre to beat Denver's Henry Craig and Fabio Biasion by an 8-6 score.

Elsewhere, Zach Phillips won his first singles match of the weekend, defeating the Tigers' Florin Radu in a third-set tiebreaker. Phillips bounced back from a loss in the first set to get past Radu in the second, and won a marathon third-set 13-11 to take the match 0-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11).
