Wong Named MAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - It was announced this afternoon that Aaron Wong of the Western Michigan men's tennis team was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for March 27, marking the first time in his career he's won the Player of the Week award.

Western Michigan senior Aaron Wong went 8-0 over four matches for the Broncos last weekend, who went a perfect 4-0 in competition against Kalamazoo College (7-0), Ferris State (7-0), Butler (5-2), and Grand Valley State (6-1). Wong started the weekend with a 4-0 overall day against Kalamazoo College and Ferris State, earning a pair of No. 3 doubles victories, as well as wins in Nos. 4 and 5 singles. Wong teamed with Jim Beckwith in the early match against the Hornets, beating Alan Faber and Mike Korn 8-1 in No. 3 doubles, and went on to beat Korn 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Wong was just as good in the nightcap, coming back from a set down in singles play to beat Ferris State's Otto Keresztes 6-7 (7), 6-4, 1-0 (7). Wong again teamed with Beckwith in doubles play, beating Keresztes and Aaron Dial 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.

Wong posted another 4-0 day on Sunday, starting with a No. 3 doubles win over Butler's Pulok Bhattacharya and Andres Maynez. Wong and Beckwith downed the pairing from Butler 8-2 in No. 3 doubles, helping WMU clinch the doubles point. Wong was successful in singles play as well, beating Brandon Woods 6-3, 6-0 in No. 5 singles. Wong and Beckwith won their second singles match of the day in the nightcap against Grand Valley State, beating Andrew Darrell and Andrew Heuerman 8-0 at No. 3 singles. Wong went on to win his first career match at No. 1 singles, beating Francis Bertrand 6-3, 6-3 in the Broncos' 6-1 team victory.
