Broncos Extend Streak to Six, Sweep Doubleheader

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team tied their longest win streak of the season with a pair of victories on Sunday, as the Broncos defeated Butler 5-2 and Grand Valley State 6-1 at West Hills Athletic Club to reach six straight wins.  With the wins, the Broncos improve to 14-7 on the season.

The doubleheader afforded the Broncos the opportunity to try several line-up combinations, with nine different players notching singles victories.  Aaron Wong went 2-0 in singles play, including his first career win at No. 1 singles in the match against the Lakers.  The Broncos were perfect in doubles play, winning all six matches on their slate.

The day began with the win over the Bulldogs, with the Broncos opening with a dominant doubles session before taking four of six singles matches.  Wong and Jim Beckwith opened the scoring with an 8-2 win over Pulok Bhattacharya and Andres Maynez in the No. 3 match, and the session was clinched when Ross VanderPloeg and Stephen Payne downed Billy Weldon and Tommy Marx 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match.  Nadin Indre and Ruben Greiner closed the doubles session with a hard-fought win at No. 1 doubles, beating Sam O'Neill and Brandon Woods 8-6.

Wong gave the Broncos a 2-0 advantage in the match with a win over Brandon Woods at No. 5 singles, and Greiner put the Broncos in position to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marx at No. 3 singles.  The match was clinched when Indre defeated O'Neill at No. 2 doubles by a 6-4, 6-1 score.  VanderPloeg closed the scoring for the Broncos, posting a dominating second set against Bhattacharya to win No. 1 singles by a score of 7-5, 6-0.

The match against the Lakers started in similar fashion, with the Broncos sweeping doubles play in the exact same order to take the lead.  Wong and Beckwith earned their second team win of the day, shutting out Andrew Darrell and Andrew Heuerman 8-0 in the No. 3 doubles match.  Payne and VanderPloeg cruised past Andrew Bole and Ben Esh-Nauta 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match, and Indre and Greiner wrapped their days with an 8-5 win over Francis Bertrain and Bryan Hodges in the No. 1 doubles match.

Michael Treis picked up the first singles win of the match for the Broncos, shutting out Bole to the tune of a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 singles match.  he was followed by Payne, who controlled the tempo against Michael Kaye in the No. 5 singles match and won 6-1, 6-1.  Andrew Cahn clinched the match victory for the Broncos with an exciting second-set tiebreaker win, beating Hodges 6-3, 7-6 (7), and Wong picked up his first career win at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Francis Bertrand.  Pablo Mora and Marc Shideler wrapepd the scoring for the Broncos, winning the Nos. 2 and 6 matches, respectively.
