Morin, Indre Highlight MAC Awards Haul

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team brought home a Mid-American Conference Tournament title this past weekend, and can now lay claim to a plethora of individual awards as the conference announced its season-end awards on Tuesday.

Nadin Indre was named the MAC Player of the Year, while WMU head coach Dave Morin was named the conference's Coach of the Year. Indre was also named to the All-MAC First Team, while teammates Ross VanderPloeg and Zeyad Montasser were named to the Second Team. Senior Pablo Olivarez was the recipient of the Jack Vredevelt Sportsmanship Award, named for former WMU head coach Jack Vredevelt.

Indre finished the season with a 30-11 overall record in singles play and 26-17 overall in doubles play. Indre went 5-0 overall during the conference tournament to earn Most Outstanding Player honors, clinching the Broncos' 4-3 win over Northern Illinois in the semifinals and contributing a pair of wins in the 4-0 win over Buffalo in the finals.

Morin led the Broncos as the No. 3 seed in the tournament as Western Michigan defeated No. 6 seed Chicago State, 4-0, No. 2 seed Northern Illinois, 4-3 and No. 1 seed Buffalo, 4-0. Morin's Western Michigan squad won the programs sixth MAC Men's Tennis Championship in the last seven years. Morin now has 16 total MAC championships to his credit, including nine tournament championships and seven regular season titles.

Olivarez acted as a senior co-captain on the Broncos and provided leadership over the course of the season, compiling a 20-19 singles record and a 23-16 record in doubles. Olivarez clinched the MAC championship victory with a two-set win over Buffalo's Wojciech Starakiewicz, breaking a 4-4 second-set tie with a break and winning the match 6-2, 6-4.

The other senior co-captain, Montasser, claimed All-MAC honors for the first time in his career. Montasser tied his career-best singles record with a 23-18 record, going 9-2 in Nos. 2/3 singles combined. Junior Ross VanderPloeg ranked second on the team with a 26-11 singles record, including a perfect 5-0 record in conference play and a 12-match win streak in the middle of the season.
