WMU Golf Heads to State College

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - WMU is participating in the Nittany Lion Women's Invitational this weekend for the sixth time in as many seasons, and seventh time over all.

THE TOURNAMENT: The 54-hole tournament will include 18 holes Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the par-72 layout that will play to 6,229 yards. The field will take the best four scores out of six golfers, a format used in Big Ten competition.

THE FIELD: The tournament will feature 17 teams - Penn State, Columbia, Old Dominion, Longwood, Harvard, Western Michigan, Princeton, Bucknell, Charleston, Georgetown, Cincinnati, William & Mary, Yale, Akron, Minnesota, Monmouth and Ohio.

THE HISTORY: Penn State’s Nittany Lion Invitational has been played 35 times since the tournament’s inception in 1974. Penn State has won the title 19 times. Only 12 other schools have claimed the team title. Penn State’s last title came in 2010 as the Nittany Lions ended a four-year drought.

WMU AT THE NITTANY LION INVITATIONAL: Western Michigan has participated in this event seven times in program history with the first coming in 2005 when it was referred to as the Lady Lion Invitational.  The Broncos' best finish came in 2005 when they finished second in the 17-team field.  WMU's lone medalist came in 2007 when Laura Bavaird recorded a 54-hole score of 223, the eighth lowest 54-hole score in program history.

WMU'S LINE UP: Western Michigan will be represented by Melissa Beurmann, Kelsey Carney, Kaylee Imel, Chloe Lawrie, Heather Marks and Laura Moutrey.

WMU SO FAR IN 2012-13: The Broncos opened the season at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State.  Marks led the team, matching her career low for 54 holes (237).  WMU followed with a second place finish at the Cardinal Classic where four team members tied for eighth place.

DID YOU KNOW? The Broncos close out the fall in two weeks at the Mid-American Conference Preview hosted by Ohio at the Longaberger Course, the site of the 2013 MAC Championships, in Nashport, Ohio.
