WMU Golf Looks Toward Cardinal Classic
YORKTOWN, Ind. - The Western Michigan golf team has the Cardinal Classic in its sites as the Broncos continue the fall season.
THE TOURNAMENT: The 36-hole tournament will include 18 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday on the par-72 layout that will play to 6,258 yards. The action begins both days with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
THE FIELD: The tournament will feature 12 teams as Ball State welcomes Dayton, IUPUI, Marshall, Northern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Ohio, Valparaiso, UIC, Western Illinois and Western Michigan.
THE HISTORY: Ball State hosted the Cardinal Classic for the first time in the fall of 2001 and has hosted it each year since. The Players Club has been the site for the event every year but one.
WMU AT THE CARDINAL CLASSIC: WMU has not participated in the event since winning the team title in fall of 2010, finishing five shots clear of the 14-team field. Britney Hamilton finished a shot of out of the medalist spot, finishing second at 143 (70-73).
The Broncos had four of its five golfers finish in the top 20 paced by Hamilton, including Leah Grawburg and Stephanie Koske, both tying for 12th place. Kaylee Imel and Melissa Beurmann are the only current Broncos to compete in the event the last time WMU was in the field, finishing T-17th and T-25th, respectively.
WMU'S LINE UP: Western Michigan will again be represented by Beurmann, Kelsey Carney, Imel, Heather Marks and Laura Moutrey. Freshman Chloe Lawrie will make her collegiate debut, competing as an individual.
WMU SO FAR IN 2012-13: The Broncos opened the season at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State. Marks led the team, matching her career low for 54 holes (237).
DID YOU KNOW? The Cardinal Classic is the only tournament in program history a Bronco has won medalist three times, and the wins came in back-to-back-to-back seasons. Stephanie Donkin accomplished the feat twice, winning in 2003 and again in 2004, while Erica Bieniek captured the individual title in 2002.
