Marks Paces WMU Golf at Mary Fossum Invitational
EAST LANSING, Mich. - WMU Golf opened the 2012-13 at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State, participating in the event for the first time since 2009.
Junior Heather Marks matched her career low 54-hole score, carding a three-round total of 237, as she was the low finisher for the Broncos. Marks opened with an 8-over par 80 but then lowered her score by a stroke in each of the final two rounds to finish 79-78.
Along with leading WMU in score, Marks also led the Broncos in birdies recorded, carding seven of the team's 17 for the tournament.
Kelsey Carney also bested her 54-hole career low with a three-round total of 244. Her previous mark was 246 at the 2012 Rio Verde Invitational.
As a team, Western Michigan finished 15th with a low team round of 316, finishing with a three-round total of 966. Purdue captured the team title, paced by an opening-round 288, the lowest first round in the field. The Boilermakers bested tournament host Michigan State by seven strokes after the Spartans had the lowest second (289) and third (296) team scores of the tournament.
Texas State's Krista Puisite carded identical 1-under par rounds of 71 in the first two rounds before closing with a 73 to finish as the tournament medalist at 215 (-1).
