WMU Golf Finishes Sixth at MAC Championships
FISHERS, Ind. - The Broncos finished five spots behind 14-time champion Kent State as the Golden Flashes claimed a 16-stroke victory over Ball State in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships.
Ball State's Jenna Hague claimed medalist in dramatic fashion, coming from eight strokes back to start the final round and winning with a birdie on the first playoff hole. The turnaround point of the round was a birdie on 13 and then her first collegiate hole-in-one on the 172-yard 15th hole, with a four iron one day after carding a triple bogey on the same hole.
Going 3-under par over 13, 14 and 15 gave Hague a one stroke lead and she needed a birdie on 18 to force the playoff with Toledo's Piyathida Chaiyapan, who also birdied the 18th. On the first playoff hole, Chaiyapan settled for par while Hague equaled her effort in regulation with a birdie. Hague's final round 69 ties for the lowest round to close a MAC Women's Golf Championship.
Kent State entered the day with a five stroke lead and gradually grew its advantage to its eventual 16-stroke margin over Ball State. KSU's Mike Morrow was named MAC Coach of the Year and Mercedes Germino earned MAC Golfer of the Year. KSU's Jennifer Ha was named MAC Freshman of the Year and Ohio's Megan Weaver earned MAC Sportswoman of the Year.
The Broncos maintained its sixth place positioning throughout the day not able to make a move on Akron or Eastern Michigan, the two teams directly in front of WMU in the team standings.
Laura Moutrey registered her first career top-20 finish in a collegiate tournament, tying for 14th after a final round 81. Her 54-hole total of 239 is a career low for the Ontario native. She was the low scorer every day for WMU, joined by Melissa Beurmann on Sunday.
