Moutrey Leads WMU at MAC Golf Championships
FISHERS, Ind. - Laura Moutrey leads WMU after day one at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships. Ball State has the first round lead.
For only the third time in championship history, there is a team name atop the leader board after day one that is not Kent State. Ball State, carded a team score of 298 to hold a three shot lead of KSU (301) and a six stroke lead over Toledo (304). Ohio (1999) and Western Michigan (2004) are the only other teams to hold an 18-hole besides Kent State in the 13-year history of the tournament.
The 2012 edition of the Broncos stand alone in sixth place after carding a team score of 321. Moutrey, who said she was happy with her consistency in the fairways and greens in regulation, shot a 7-over par 79 and is currently tied for 15th with five over golfers.
KSU's Shamira Marshall holds the 18-hole individual lead after shooting an even-par round of 72. Eastern Michigan's Shannon Wagner and Ball State's Katie Windlan are tied for second at 1-over par. Piyathida Chaiyapan (Toledo), Jenna Hague (Ball State) and Georgina Hunt (Toledo) round out the top five, tied for fourth at 2-over par.
WMU's Melissa Beurmann is tied with three other golfers for the second-most birdies thus far in the championship with three. She birdied a pair of par 5's, the ninth and 16th holes, as well as the par-4, 319-yard 14th.
WMU and the rest of the field will continue the 2012 MAC Women's Golf Championships Saturday morning with tee-times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Broncos will tee off from 9:20 a.m. through 10 a.m.
