No. 32 Western Michigan Drops Home Finale Against No. 19 Illinois
KALAMAZOO, Mich.- No. 32 Western Michigan put up a good fight against Big Ten opponent No. 19 Illinois, but fell to the Illini on Senior Day, 195.400 to 194.025. Seniors Cepeda Carter, Sheila Dible, Stacy Kramer and Taylor Zondervan were honored at the conclusion of the meet.
Zondervan made the most of her final showing at University Arena, posting the Broncos' lone individual title, winning the floor exercise with a 9.825. She also finished runner-up on vault with a 9.825 and totaled a 38.900 in the all-around.
Carter, freshman Shelby Pflug and sophomore Lauren Bledsoe tied for fifth on vault with a 9.775. Carter and Pflug also tied for fourth on floor, again registering a 9.775. O'Brien added a fifth-place finish on balance beam with a 9.725.
It was the third-straight meet Western Michigan faced a top-25 opponent and the first loss for the Broncos at University Arena this season, going 5-1 in their home venue in 2012. It was also just the second loss for WMU in a dual meet setting.
Illinois scored over a 195 for its seventh time in 10 meets. The Illini edged the Broncos on three events, vault, bars and beam. The Broncos outscored their counterparts on floor exercise, 48.825 to 48.575.
Western Michigan (8-6) heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich., Saturday, March 17, concluding the regular season at Central Michigan at 1 p.m. The Broncos will be competing for a share of the Mid-American Conference title, entering the meet with a 4-1 MAC record, while the Chippewas are 5-0 in conference duals.
