Bronco Gymnasts Shine In Season Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan had the top finisher in all four events and swept the top six spots on uneven bars, downing Centenary, 191.450 to 186.175 in Broncos' season-opener Friday night at University Arena.

The Brown & Gold bettered Centenary in every event but balance beam, where the Ladies of CC edged WMU by a tenth of a point. The Broncos highest event score was on bars with a 48.675. WMU went over 48 in every rotation but on beam, scoring a 46.250.

Individual winners for Western Michigan were freshman Shelby Pflug and sophomore Lauren Bledsoe on vault (9.750), senior Taylor Zondervan on bars (9.775), junior Caroline O'Brien on beam (9.725) and senior Stacy Kramer on floor exercise (9.725). It was Zondervan's first meet as a Bronco, after sitting out last year following her transfer from Michigan.

The Broncos also had five of the top six finishes on vault and the top three on floor. Pflug and Bledsoe also tied for second on floor (9.650). Twins Brynn and Lindsay Wienckowski took second and third on bars with scores of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. O'Brien tied for third as well with a 9.725. Senior Cepeda Carter took the all-around title, totaling 36.800.

Western Michigan (1-0) returns to University Arena Sunday, Jan. 15, hosting Mid-American Conference foe Kent State at 1 p.m.
