Broncos Ground Falcons, 1-0
A 19th minute goal by Diana Dedvukaj was all WMU (5-5-2, 1-1-2 MAC) needed to get past the struggling Falcons (1-10-1, 0-2-1 MAC). Junior goalkeeper Michelle Watson made two saves in the Broncos’ third shutout of the season. The win was WMU’s first Mid-American Conference win of the season along with head coach Nate Norman’s first career MAC victory.
A ball was played into the midfield and was corralled by sophomore midfielder Rachel Chaney. Chaney played a through ball that split BGSU’s two center backs and Dedvukaj snuck in behind them. Falcon goalkeeper Jenna Underwood came out to challenged Dedvukaj but the sophomore forward dribbled around her and calmly deposited it in the net. The goal was Dedvukaj’s second of the season and the first goal for WMU in four games. The assist was Chaney’s first of the season.
The Broncos were able to hold the Falcons to just four shots in the second half, with only two of them landing on net. In total WMU outshot BGSU 16-11 with shots on goal being tied at 4-4. Senior Anina Cicerone led all players with a game-high six shots.
Western Michigan heads on the road next weekend at Miami on Friday and then to Ball State on Sunday.
