Campbell Advances in 400 Hurdles at NCAA East Prelims
Campbell finished fourth in her heat with a season-best time of 58.31 seconds but her time was good enough for ninth overall. Her best time came after she stumbled on the eight hurdle, but was able to recover and finish strong. The Emmett, Mich., native competes in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7:45 p.m.
"It was a near superb race but also nearly a disaster," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "She was ahead until she crashed into that hurdle but she did a really good job of getting herself together and finishing strong. It is going to take a really good effort to move on after tomorrow and there are a lot of great hurdlers here today.
Although the Broncos had several individuals compete, Campbell was the only one to move on. Victoria Chatman was just .02 seconds shy of qualifying for the 400 meter dash quarterfinals, while Rachel Whitley and Aisha Hodge fell short of qualifying in the 800 meter run.
Senior distance specialist Samantha Draney saw her career come to an end after competing in the 10k.
Campbell and Andrea Hiler, who competed in the shot put, will compete tomorrow. Hiler, who finished runner up in the discus at the Mid-American Conference Championship, competes in the discus at 3 p.m.
Chiara Allen competes in the triple jump on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., while Campbell, Chatman, Andrea Arnold and Leya Munwam compete as a part of the 4x400 meter relay team at 9:45 p.m.
