2014 in Review
The W Club celebrated the history of Western Michigan Athletics with a number of reunions over the course of the 2014-15 school year, recognizing all reunings with a campus tour, a tailgate prior to the GALA-MA-ZOO event, and an in-game recognition during the Broncos' football game against Toledo. Here is a look at the groups we honored this year!Track and Cross Country 50th Anniversary
The 1964 WMU cross country team was the first in the Mid-American conference history to claim an NCAA title. The Broncos followed that up with the national title in 1965 as well. To date, only five schools have accomplished back-to-back national titles in cross country. Coach George Dales mentored the 1964 and 1965 teams that combined to go 9-0 in dual competition.
Aviation Bowl Reunion
WMU made its postseason football debut in the inaugural Aviation Bowl on December 9th, 1961 against New Mexico at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. The Broncos dropped their tilit with the Lobos by a final score of 28-12. Coach Merle Schlosser guided the Broncos to a 5-3-1 regular season mark and a 4-1-1 conference record.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis MAC Champion Reunion
Starting with the men's team's first championship during the 1950 season, the men's and women's tennis teams have combined for 33 MAC regular season championships, 14 MAC Tournament championships, and 14 NCAA Tournament appearances. Both the men's and women's teams won their respective MAC Tournaments in 1999, and thus became the first teams in conference history to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. These record-breaking teams have featured some of the best players and coaches Western Michigan has had to offer through the years, with seven women and 10 men enshrined in the WMU Athletics Hall of Fame, including head coaches Betsy Kuhle and Dave Morin, who are active to this day.
