Perini Named Academic All-MAC For Third Year in a Row

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan’s Andrea Perini was among the names listed as Academic All-Mid-American Conference, making it the third year in a row she has received such honors.
A senior from Sterling Heights, Mich., Perini carries a 3.65 GPA in exercise science. She competed as an all-arounder in 11 of 12 meets and had the Broncos’ highest individual finish at the MAC Championships, tying for fourth on the vault and making a podium appearance with a 9.825. Perini also was the only Bronco to earn a MAC award this season, being named MAC Co-Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 3, after capturing the all-around title against UIC.
Throughout the season, she recorded eight first-place finishes - four on the vault, twice on the beam and twice as an all-arounder. Her season highs were 9.850 on the vault, 9.750 on the bars, 9.725 on the beam, 9.825 on the floor and 38.825 in the all-around.
Perini qualified as an at-large all-arounder for the NCAA Central Regional tallying the fifth highest at large regional qualifying score with a 38.570.
A total of 12 student-athletes were named Academic All-Mid-American Conference. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team is the number that is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater. Kent State led the way with four selections.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered.
