WMU Athletics Unveils 2014 Hall of Fame Class
Kalamazoo, Mich. - Western Michigan Athletics and the Hall of Fame committee announce the Class of 2014 - Jason Babin, football (2000-03), Larissa Chinwah-Mavros, women's tennis (1999-2002), Tracy Daniel, softball/volleyball (1983-86), Jamal Mayers, ice hockey (1993-96), Leon McGee, men's basketball (1991-93) and Dick Pond, men's track & field (1960-61). Four men and two women representing seven different sports and four separate decades make up this year's class.
Jason Babin - Football (2000-03)
Sporting News All-America Fourth Team (2002) and Sporting News All-America Second Team (2003) … Second Team All-MAC (2001) … drafted with the 27th pick in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft by Houston Texans and is still WMU's only first round draft selection ever … Record for career sacks (38) and tackles for loss (75) … holds record for single season tackles for loss (33) … second in single-season sacks (15) … a part of WMU All-Century team … First Team All-MAC (2002-03) … 2002-03 MAC Defensive Player of the Year ... over 10-year NFL career, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl twice (2010-11) ... amassed a career high 18 sacks in 2011.
Larissa Chinwah-Mavros - Women's Tennis (1999-2002)
Ranks 26th on the all-time wins list (152) … four-time First Team All-MAC selection (1999-2002) … three-time Academic All-MAC selection (2000-02) … ITA Scholar Athlete (2001-02) … 2002 ITA Ciissie Leary Sportsmanship Award - Midwest Region … 1999 MAC Freshman of the Year ... member of the 1999 and 2000 MAC Championship teams and NCAA participant teams.
Tracy Daniel - Softball/Volleyball (1983-86)
As a part of the 1984 softball MAC champions Daniel had a fielding percentage of .946 with 159 putouts and 80 assists… had a .248 batting average… 1984 All-MAC second baseman… honored on the All-MAC Academic team three years in a row (84’, 85’,86’)… during one year of volleyball she was part of the 1982 MAC championship team… Daniel is currently a physical education teacher at Comstock and was recently named Michigan Physical Education Teacher of the Year.
Jamal Mayers - Ice Hockey (1993-96)
Player in 155 games, scoring 55 goals, with 104 assists for 159 career points (ranking 15th) at WMU ... ranks 16th in points per game (1.03 ppg) ... two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1994 and 1996 ... record 88-53-13 during 4 seasons at WMU ... 14 seasons in the NHL from 1998-2013 with 915 games played, 90 goals, 129 assists for 219 career points ... 2013 Stanley Cup Champion with the Chicago Blackhawks ... gold medal in 2007 World Championships ... silver medal in 2008 World Championships ... studio analyst for the NHL Network.
Leon McGee - Men's Basketball (1992-94)
Three-time All-MAC selection, earing first team in 1993 and second team in 1992 and 1994 ... one of 30 Broncos to score 1,000 or more points in a career ... ranks 13th in all-time scoring with 1,217 career points ... ranks sixth in career free throws made (354) and seventh in free throw attempts (464) ... averaged 30.0 minutes per game during career, which ranks 10th ... holds record for most free throws attempted in a game (21) against Akron on Jan. 8, 1994 and is tied for the fourth most steals in a game (6) at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 22, 1994 ... member of the 1991-92 NIT team ... returned to his alma mater in January of 2014, working in the human resources department.
Dick Pond - Men's Track & Field, Cross Country (1960-61)
Member of the 1960 and 1961 MAC Track Championship teams… 1960 and 1961 Central Collegiate Conference Indoor Mile Champion… WMU record holder for indoor mile (4:10.2) and outdoor mile (4:07.6)… ranked in the top 25 milers for 1961 in the U.S. by Track and Field News… MAC Champion in the mile (1961)… member of the 4xmile relay that set a new collegiate and American record (1961/16:50.4)… member of the winning Distance Medley Relay team at the Drake Relay (1961) ... member of the 1960 MAC XC Championship team ... named All-American after finishing 14th at NCAA Championships in 1960 ... founded Dick Pond Athletics in 1969.
The WMU Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014 will be honored during a ceremony on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014 at the Fetzer Center at 6 p.m., followed by an on-field ackowledgement at halftime of the WMU football game versus Eastern Michigan the following day.
