Men's Tennis Earns Two MAC Weekly Awards
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Western Michigan men's tennis team received two honors from the Mid-American Conference today, as the MAC announced that Nadin Indre was the MAC Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week, and Indre and his doubles partner Stephen Payne were honored as the Doubles Team of the Week. These rank as the first two weekly awards of the season for the Broncos.
Indre was one of four Broncos to go 2-0 in singles last week, helping the Broncos to a 3-0 record with wins over Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State at home and clinching a 4-3 victory against Cleveland State on the road. Indre started the week with a win over the Flames' Alexander Raa in No. 1 singles, winning a first-set tiebreaker and ultimately taking the match 6-5 (3), 6-2. Indre recorded the deciding victory in the Broncos' 4-3 win over the Vikings on Friday, coming back from a second set loss to Jorg Van der Vloet in the No. 1 singles match to shut him out in the third and win 6-5, 5-6, 6-0. On the season, Indre is 4-0 in No. 1 singles matches.
Indre and Payne went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Broncos last week, helping them claim the doubles point in all three matches as well. They clinched the doubles point against UIC on Monday, downing Alexander Raa and Carl Hedstrom 6-1 to give the Broncos the first point of the match, and wrapped up a perfect doubles session against Chicago State in the second half of that doubleheader by beating Sergiu Muresan and Mario Noboa 6-3. The duo wrapped up their perfect week with a 6-5 win in the No. 1 doubles match against Cleveland State, beating Ali Shabib and Joe Vanmeter 6-5 in the No. 1 doubles match.
