KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team won both ends of a doubleheader at West Hills Athletic Club on Saturday, defeating Butler 7-0 and Chicago State 6-1 in their 2014 dual match home opener. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Broncos opened with a 7-0 shutout of the Bulldogs, taking all nine matches for the perfect sweep against Butler. Meika Ashby and Yuriko Ono opened the proceedings with a 6-0 shutout over Sienna Reuter and Grace Hyde in the No. 3 doubles match, while Kathleen Hawkins and Tracy Kuhle overcame a slow start to defeat Stephani McLoughlin and Kailey Eaton 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles match. Nini Sujashvili and Caroline Aleck were also able to pull away after an even beginning in the No. 2 doubles match, beating Angelina Qin and Jocelyn Koester 6-3 to complete the session.

Kuhle made quick work of her singles opponent to put the Broncos ahead 2-0, giving up just a single game to Reuter in the No. 6 singles match and putting the Broncos in control. Sujashvili was similarly dominant against McLoughlin in No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, and Aleck clinched the match win for the Broncos with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Koester in the No. 5 singles match. Hawkins played in her first singles match of the dual match season, beating Eaton 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match, and Ashby and Kelsey King rounded out the singles session with a pair of straight sets wins in the Nos. 3 and 4 singles matches, respectively.

The match against the Cougars also began with a sweep in the doubles session, though this time Sujashvili and Aleck were the ones to make the first move with a 6-1 win over Kirsa Utech and Gema Bolado in the No. 2 doubles match. Hawkins and Kuhle clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Carynne Lloyd and Faith Huckabee in the No. 1 doubles match, and Ashby and Ono finished the clean sweep with a 6-3 win over Marnie Perez-Ochoa and Karyn Emeralda.

WMU went up 2-0 when Perez-Ochoa, trailing 6-1, 3-0 pulled out of the No. 4 singles match against Aleck, and the lead quickly expanded to 3-0 after Sujashvili cruised past Utech 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Ono improved to 2-1 in dual match singles on the season with a win over Sabrine Navarro in the No. 6 singles match, and Ashby thoroughly controlled her No. 2 singles match against Bolado in winning 6-0, 6-2. King rounded out the evening with a win over Lloyd in the No. 3 singles match, shutting her opponent out in the second set to win 6-2, 6-0.
