Broncos Fall to EMU; Host MAC Quarterfinals on Sunday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team closed out the 2013 regular season falling to Eastern Michigan, 2-1, on a rainy afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex Thursday afternoon.

The Broncos (9-5-4, 7-2-2, MAC) took a 1-0 lead into the half after Heather Piccariello volleyed a shot into the net from 25 yards out after a corner kick was cleared out of the box with 32 seconds remaining. The goal was the first of Piccariello's career.

The Eagles responded with two goals just over five minutes a part in the second half to seal the win and the regular season Mid-American Conference Championships. The first goal was scored by Angela Vultaggio after Cara Cutaia played a long ball into the box. Vultaggio beat her mark and slid to kick the ball past a charging Michelle Watson in the 61st minute.

In the 66th minute Cutaia was given then ball at the top of the box by Martha Stevens and let the ball fly from 20-yards out into the right corner of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

Western Michigan tried to respond but the EMU defense clamped down and held WMU to just one shot in the final 45 minutes.

The Broncos finish the regular season fourth in the MAC and will host in the MAC Quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. against an opponent that is still to be determined.
