Broncos Shine on First Day at Green & White Invite
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Michigan State Green & White Invitational, with freshman Yuriko Ono going 2-1 on the day and several other Broncos picking up wins. The Broncos will return to action on Sunday with a round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
Ono and Kelsey King both earned victories in the Broncos' hidden duals match against members of Eastern Michigan, with both players overcoming their opponents in third sets. Ono bounced back from a second set loss to win the third against Daphne Friedrichs, defeating her MAC foe 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (11) after a marathon third set tiebreaker. King also went to a third set while taking on Mariya Toncheva, but she was able to dispatch her opponent in somewhat quicker fashion, winning 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (5) for her fifth straight singles win.
Ono was also victorious in doubles play, teaming with Caroline Aleck to pick up an impressive tiebreaker victory over a pair from Michigan State. Aleck and Ono downed Jennifer Yen and Hilary Hager in a tight match, winning 8-7 (6) to represent one of the two Bronco doubles wins on the day. Meika Ashby and Nini Sujashvili also won in doubles play, cruising past Louisville's Cassie Pough and Olivia Boesing in an 8-1 win.
