KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Ali Russo netted two goals as the Western Michigan women’s soccer team remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference play after beating Ball State, 2-1, at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Russo netted the game’s opening goal in the fifth minute when Gina Maddi lobbed a pass over the BSU back line and WMU’s sophomore forward beat a defender to the ball and slotted it into the lower corner at the far right post for her first collegiate goal.

“It was a great ball by Gina and it curled perfectly,” said Russo. “I knew I couldn’t mess it up but I didn’t have much of an angle and I just shot it and it went in.”

Ball State tied the game with 32 seconds remaining in the first half after a shot from distance was unintentionally deflected into the Bronco net by one of WMU’s defenders.

Early on the second half the Broncos (7-3-3, 5-0-1 MAC) had a great chance to take a 2-1 lead when Maddi blasted a shot on net from just outside the box but BSU goalkeeper Brooke Dennis stretched out to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Russo knocked in the game-winner in the 80th minute after Lauren Fearday served a ball to her at the top of the box. The Kalamazoo native held the ball, spun and kicked it into the net for her second of the day.

I think overall we wanted to keep the ball and stay organized defensively,” said head coach Nate Norman. “Ali was fantastic today and has been fantastic all season. She was a bit unlucky with some chances early on in the season. I was really proud of her effort today.”

The Broncos now remain the lone undefeated team in the MAC but face tough road tests at Kent State on Friday and at Ohio on Sunday.
