Hawkins & Sujashvili Win In Doubles at ITA Regional
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team wrapped the second day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Michigan, with the doubles pairing of Nini Sujashvili and Kathleen Hawkins winning in the consolation round of the main doubles flight. The duo will take to the court in the main singles draw on Saturday.
Playing outdoors in the early evening doubles session, Hawkins and Sujashvili made quick work of Wright State's Tori Turner and one of the Madrigal sisters, downing them 8-2 for the duo's third doubles win of the season.
Sujashvili and Hawkins were in the consolation round because of a close loss in doubles earlier in the day; the pairing forged an impressive comeback against Northwestern's Lok Sze Leung and Manon Peri in their opening match of the main draw, pulling to within 6-5 against the pair of Wildcats. However, Northwestern gained the upper hand and took two of the last three games, winning the set 8-6.
Sujashvili and Hawkins will open the main draw of singles on Saturday, with Hawkins owning a bye into the second round of singles. Sujashvili will face Illinois's Misia Kedzierski in the first round.
Elsewhere on Friday, freshman Meika Ashby authored a valiant effort in her final singles qualifying match, falling in a second-set tiebreaker to Michigan's Sara Remynse. Ashby bounced back from a first set loss to give Remynse all the challenge she could handle in the second set, but Remynse won a second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (6) to win the match 6-3, 7-6 (6).
