Ashby Wins Two, Advances at ITA Midwest Regional
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Western Michigan women's tennis player Meika Ashby advanced to the round of 16 at the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association qualifying draw on Thursday, defeating two singles opponents early in the day to bring herself one step closer to qualifying for the main draw. Ashby will face Michigan's Sara Remynse tomorrow at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing the main draw.
Ashby started the day with a convincing victory over Cleveland State's Princess Gbadamosi, dominating her opponent and wrapping the match in a tidy one hour and 15 minutes. Ashby took the first set against Gbadomosi 6-1, and started the second set on a 3-0 run to fully take control. Ashby eventually dispatched Gbadomosi 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the round of 32.
From there, Ashby faced Milwaukee's Diana Tokar, who advanced to the second round via bye. Ashby made quick work of Tokar in the first set to open the proceedings. Tokar stole the first game of the second set from Ashby, who responded with six straight game victories to take the match 6-2, 6-1.

In addition to Ashby's victories on Thursday, the ITA has released the start time and bracket for the main doubles draw of the tournament. Western Michigan's Kathleen Hawkins and Nini Sujashvili will officially begin their weekends at the Regional on Friday when they face Northwestern's Lok Sze Leung and Manon Peri at 2 p.m.
