Volleyball Sweeps Wright State at Flyer Classic
Stephenee Yancy dominated offensively for the Broncos, leading them with a 15-kill performance and hitting .481 for the match, committing just two errors. Claire Gerwig posted nine kills and added two blocks, and Richelle Ranney came off the bench for seven kills, a .600 hitting percentage, and a team-high three blocks. Lena Oliver recorded 15 digs and was joined in double-digits by Kaycee Acree, who made it to 10 balls. Lexie Pawlik recorded 35 assists and set the Broncos to a .323 hitting percentage.
The Broncos showed no signs of road weariness in the first set, opening the match on a 7-0 run to put the Raiders on their heels from the outset. Gerwig ripped a kill to open the proceedings, and Yancy tacked on with a kill of her own to make it a 2-0 lead. Yancy forced the Raiders into using their first timeout with a kill to make it 6-0, and the assault from the sophomore middle continued with yet another bomb to make it 8-2. Rachel Sheffer put the Broncos up 10-3 with a kill down the left sideline, and Alysia Baznik made it an eight-point advantage with an ace on the next point. Yancy made the Broncos the first to 20 with a kill to give WMU a 20-8 lead, the largest advantage they enjoyed in the set, and Gerwig iced the set with a kill to make it 25-17.
WMU’s defense would set the tone for the next two sets, as the Broncos out-blocked the Raiders 5-0 in the last two frames to halt talk of a comeback. The Broncos again jumped out to a 2-0 lead on kills from Yancy and Gerwig, and WMU was on its way to a post-to-post victory. Baznik went off the blocker for a kill to make it a 10-8 lead, and the Broncos were the first to 15 points after Yancy’s kill capped a 6-2 run and forced a Raider timeout. The closest the Raiders would get the rest of the way was when Marisa Aiello recorded a kill to make it 18-16, but the Broncos closed on a 7-0 run that was capped by a block from Gerwig and Yancy.
Wright State took its only lead of any kind at the beginning of the third set, opening on a 4-1 run to set the Broncos back on their heels. WMU responded with its third 7-0 run of the night to re-take the lead, though, with Baznik breaking the tie with a kill and Pawlik forcing a Raider timeout with a kill to make it 7-4. The Broncos never looked back from that point, with Ranney slamming home a kill to make it 14-8 and Yancy bashing one to force Wright State timeout at 16-10. WMU closed the set on a 9-3 run from that point, with Ranney scoring kills on two of the final three points to seal the 25-13 win.
