MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Western Michigan women’s tennis team was dominant in singles play on the first day of the 38th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, going 6-2 in singles matches against Colorado State and also picking up a doubles victory on the clay courts at the Town Club. Play will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. ET when the Broncos face the Rams in doubles play, and the Broncos will wrap the second day with a singles session against Marquette at noon.

Fielding a singles line-up comprised of four returning players and four freshmen newcomers, the Broncos took care of business in their singles sessions against the Rams in winning five of their eight singles matches in straight sets and generally playing at a high level. Meika Ashby and Tracy Kuhle, winners of the doubles flight at the ITA Summer Circuit Event at WMU’s Sorensen Courts in July, picked up their first career college victory in doubles by defeating Florida International’s Kamila Pavelkova and Aleksandra Trifunovic 9-7. Ashby’s second win of the day came against the Rams’ Adriana Wojakowska in singles play; after giving up just a single game in the first set, Ashby dominated for a 6-1, 6-0 match win.

Two other freshmen earned their first collegiate wins in singles play, with each holding control throughout their matches for the victory. Yuriko Ono shutout Kwynn Ecton in their singles match, winning 6-0, 6-0, and Barbare Eristavi was similarly strong with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lauren Pick.

The upperclassmen also shined in singles play, picking up wins in each of their matches. The closest shave of the day was a three-set match between Kathleen Hawkins and Mollie Cooper; after dropping a first set tiebreaker, Hawkins took two straight from Cooper in winning 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (3). Senior classmate and 2013 Second Team All-MAC selection Nini Sujashvili defeated Natalie Heffron in a tight 7-6 (3), 7-5 affair, and sophomore Kelsey King rounded out the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maddie Buxton.
