KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Meika Ashby, a recent graduate of Hackett Catholic Central High School and the 2013 MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette Girls Tennis Player of the Year, was recognized in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.” Ashby, who signed a National Letter of Intent to come to Western Michigan, was among six high school athletes nationwide to appear in the weekly feature of the July 8 edition.
“That is a huge honor because it was an unexpected one. Not to say that any award is expected, but that one was out of the blue and exciting. It was really exciting,” Ashby said.
Ashby finished her four-year high school tennis career with a 94-2 record and three Division 4 state championships, including a 6-2, 6-1 title win over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard’s Colleen O’Brien this spring. She set the Michigan High School Athletic Association career record for most 6-0, 6-0 matches at 57.
Ashby was named first-team all-state by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association during each of her four years at Hackett.
