Western Michigan Continues Homestand Against Kent State

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan baseball team hosts MAC East rival Kent State this weekend, May 10-12. The three-game series begins Friday at Robert J. Bobb Stadium at 3 p.m. and continues with games at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. WMU will celebrate Alumni Day Saturday.

Western Michigan (15-32, 7-14 MAC) vs. Kent State (27-21, 14-7 MAC)

LHP Steve Laudicina (2-8, 3.70 ERA) vs. RHP Taylor Williams (8-1, 2.37 ERA)
LHP Derek Schneider (1-2, 6.84 ERA) vs. RHP Tyler Skulina (4-3, 3.96 ERA)
LHP Mike Moyer (3-5, 4.29 ERA) vs. RHP Casey Wilson (5-5, 4.56 ERA)

Western Michigan closes out the 2013 season with an eight-game homestand, which began Tuesday against Michigan State ... following the Kent State series, WMU will host Notre Dame Tuesday, May 14, in non-conference action and finishes out the year with a three-game series against Central Michigan, May 16-18.

Western Michigan is coming off a close 5-4 midweek loss to Michigan State and the Broncos went 1-2 last weekend at Akron ... WMU is batting .254 (.268 in MAC contests) and has a 5.16 staff ERA (5.11 MAC) ... the team is 13-2 when leading after seven innings, but has had trouble hanging onto leads in the middle innings, being outscored 75-38 in the fifth and sixth innings combined.

Sophomore SS Andrew Sohn leads the team in nearly every offensive statistical category, including average (.331), RBIs (34) and doubles (7) ... junior OF Steve Buglione is leading the team in average during MAC games, batting .346 ... freshman C Brett Sunde is hitting .471 over the last five games ... senior 3B Patrick Duncan is riding a 10-game hitting streak.

This will be the third straight weekend Western Michigan has gone with the Laudicina-Schneider-Moyer rotation ... Laudicina has a 3.70 ERA and leads the team in innings pitched (75.1) and strikeouts (50) ... Moyer has tossed 65 innings and has struck out 41 ... Schneider will be making his third career start and has 16 K's in 26.1 IP.

Defending MAC champion Kent State is coming off a 47-win season and College World Series appearance in 2012 ... the Golden Flashes were ranked No. 5 in the nation at the end of last season ... KSU sits second in the MAC East with a 14-7 record, and has won eight of its last nine overall games ... the Flashes went 2-1 last weekend against Central Michigan ... KSU is hitting .280 (.287 MAC) and has a staff ERA of 4.21 (2.86 MAC) ... 2012 MAC Player of the Year George Roberts is hitting .408 in MAC contests.

Western Michigan went 1-2 this past weekend at Akron, falling in games one and two (7-6, 3-2) and rebounding with a win in game three (3-2) ... Chris Bossenbery earned the win in game three, throwing 3.0 innings of relief ... Brett Sunde batted a team-best .455 over the weekend, with a pair of RBIs.

Western Michigan has 57 stolen bases this season, the most for the program since swiping 65 in 2004, and its second highest total in the last 14 seasons, dating back to 2000 ... WMU’s stolen base number has gone up every season under head coach Billy Gernon (2011-38, 2012-42) ... Andrew Sohn is 14-for-16 in stolen base attempts, while Jared Kujawa is 13-for-16 and Vinnie Booker is 9-for-12 ... Booker stole a team season-high 18 bags last year.

There are six conference games left in 2013 - home series against Kent State and Central Michigan ... Western Michigan (7-14 MAC) is currently on the outside looking in on the tournament field, but has not been eliminated from post-season play ... eight teams qualify for the tournament - teams will be seeded 1 though 8 based on conference winning percentage (MAC play only), regardless of division.
