MUNCIE, Ind. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team faced a tough road match-up against the host school in the 2013 Mid-American Conference tournament, battling but falling 4-3 to the Ball State Cardinals at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center on Friday.  The Broncos conclude the season with an 11-14 overall record.

The Broncos started out by clinching the doubles point for the third straight match and the second time this season against the Cardinals, winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and rendering the third match moot.  Kathleen Hawkins and Jill Pastunink, playing together for the first time for the first time this spring and just fifth time this season, made short work of Courtney Earnest and Courtney Wild, claiming an 8-2 victory to open the session.

The doubles pairing of Nini Sujashvili and Maggie Remynse clinched the point and improved to 8-1 against conference opponents in 2013, winning 8-4 over Bethany Moore and Kristel Sanders in the No. 2 doubles match.  The victory completed the session and give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Remynse carried the positive momentum from doubles into singles play, winning the first seven games of her match against Earnest en route to a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.  Hawkins was continued her recent hot streak with a win at No. 3 singles, easily besting Paola Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1 to give the Broncos a 3-0 advantage in the overall match.  The win was the fourth straight singles win for Hawkins, who wraps the season with a 7-3 record in her last 10 singles matches and a 7-2 record against opponents from the MAC.

However, the Cardinals were able to snag the other four victories in singles play, including a barn-burner to decide the match.  Jill Pastunink and Kristel Sanders split the first two sets of their singles match and went to a tiebreaker in the third; Sanders outlasted Pastunink 8-6 in the breaker to clinch the win for her team.
